Booking family portraits or a wedding photographer should feel exciting – but for many people, it sparks anxiety instead. Maybe you worry about you’ll look in the photos, wether the kids will cooperate, or if the whole process will feel overwhelming. I get it.
As both a mother and a Atlanta Family Photographer, I understand how stressful preparing for photos can be. I’ve been there myself – torn between pushing through the nerves or skipping portraits altogether. But over the years, I’ve learned that with the right preparation, family sessions can actually be joyful, natural, and completely stress-free.
Here are my top pro tips for getting over your session anxiety so you can stop stressing and start enjoying your portraits.
1: Talk with your photographer (more than you think)
The best way to feel comfortable during your session is to build a connection before the camera ever comes out. That’s why I make it a priority to get to know my clients ahead of time.
Talking is the most natural way to feel at ease! I couldn’t imagine meeting a client for the first time without some kind of conversation. I’ll admit — I’m a chronic oversharer and always lean into being relatable, because it helps break down walls quickly.
When I learn more about you, your partner, or your family, I can suggest prompts that create genuine interaction. Those small connections are what allow your portraits to feel documentary, natural, and completely authentic — not stiff or posed.
2. Plan ahead for confidence
One of the biggest causes of anxiety is uncertainty. Planning helps replace that uncertainty with confidence. That’s why I guide clients through styling, outfit choices, and session details from the very beginning.
Even though we can’t plan for every single moment, having a roadmap sets the stage for a smooth, saree-free experience. Need help with outfits? Grab my styling guide for ready to go looks!
3. Turn your photo session into an event
The best way to reduce stress is to treat your portraits as more than just a to do, make it a celebration! When I plan my own photos, I create a schedule that makes the entire day enjoyable, not rushed.
Here’s my go-to routine for a strep free session:
Night before: lay out the cloths, prep shoes and confirm session details
Morning of: breakfast and some energy for the day (coffee or juice)
Getting ready: I start first since I take the longest and then I help my family so no one feels rushed.
Before leaving: double check traffic, parking, any props or inspiration and posing ideas.
Arrival: arrive early to settle in and shake off any nerves
After the session: Celebrate! Go out for dinner since you’re already dress up or head home and throw on your favorite cozy pajamas and a movie.
When you approach photos this way, they become an experience for you and your family and something you all can look forward to – not just something to get through.
My Final thoughts as an Atlanta family and wedding photographer –
Family portraits aren’t just pictures – they’re part of your family story, your story, moments and memories. By connecting with your photographer, planning intentionally, and making the day special, you’ll walk away with portraits you love and memories you enjoyed creating.
Fatherhood, motherhood - all of it is wild and happening so fast. Document it while you can. (get a few bonus points with your partner / wife for booking cus you know they likely want one!)
